Trends: Social Engagement
Identifying trends recently, the one that interested me most is the new need for social engagement. With the crash of the economy people are realising where their priorities should lie – with their family, friends and communities. I therefore find it very odd that one of the biggest areas to be hit by the cuts made by this coalition government is the Arts (see the Guardian’s cutswatch) It has been proven time and time again that art and craft can bridge huge divisions, bringing communities together and allowing people a way to express themselves that they might not otherwise have. A shining example of this theory in action is the Bromley-By-Bow Centre in London and I defy anyone to read The Social Entrepreneur by Andrew Mawson and to not agree. People at all levels of society deserve access to quality, beauty, inspiration and aspiration so now I have a new challenge: how do we at Nest Creates begin to deliver this?
